Introduction to Batik Workshop with Layla Tutt ARBSA.
An introduction to the ancient ‘wax resist’ technique of Batik and create your own batiks using traditional tjanting tools and the dip-dyeing process.

Age group and abilities to be taught

18 years and above.
Suitable for adults of all ages and abilities.

Course aims and skills/knowledge to be taught

Learn about the process of batik
Use tjanting tools to create a batik
Create dip-dyed batiks

Course outline
Morning activity

Introduction
Tutor demonstration
Work on dip-dyeing batiks
Try tjanting tools
Draw a stencil

Afternoon activity

Work on batik using hand-drawn stencils and tjanting tools
Dry batiks
Group critique

Materials and equipment to be brought by participants

Apron/old shirt
ideas/sketches for a batik approx. 33cm x 33cm

Materials and equipment provided
These will be provided for use during the workshop and are included in the fee. While all this equipment is provided, you may wish to bring your own as well.

Cloth
Frames for stretching fabric
Pencils/rubbers
Paper
Tjanting tools and wax pots
Dyes
Paintbrushes
Paper towels
