Get ready for an epic clash of flavors as Grain & Glass presents Peat vs. Mezcal, an extraordinary tasting event that explores two of the world’s smokiest and most beloved spirits. We’re thrilled to welcome two expert presenters from Speciality Brands: Michael Pendergast, Whisky Portfolio Ambassador, and Gaby, Agave Ambassador, for an evening of exploration, education, and delicious discovery. They’ll guide us through 3 peated whiskies and 3 mezcals, each paired to highlight both the similarities and the stark contrasts between these bold, characterful spirits.
Peat and Mezcal: Worlds Apart, Yet Surprisingly Similar
Peated whisky and mezcal share a deep connection through their smoky profiles, both offering rich, earthy, and intense flavors. But while peat smoke infuses whisky during the malting process, mezcal gets its smoky notes from cooking agave hearts in underground pits. The resulting drinks are distinct, yet the intense, complex flavors make them fascinating to compare. Join us as we delve into the unique production processes, terroirs, and flavor profiles that make these spirits so different yet complementary in their smoky allure.
Meet the Experts
- Michael Pendergast, Whisky Portfolio Ambassador for Speciality Brands, brings a wealth of knowledge from nearly a decade working in distilleries, paired with his previous life as an award-winning cocktail bartender and archaeologist! Having visited distilleries from Japan to Canada, Michael is an authority on whisky, with a passion for production and the stories behind the brands.
- Gaby, Speciality Brands’ Agave Ambassador, hails from the heart of Mexico and has spent over a decade championing agave spirits. From Tequila to the smoky stone pits of Oaxaca’s mezcal and the rustic Philippine stills of Raicillas, her knowledge runs deep. Gaby will share her passion for mezcal and other agave spirits, offering a true insider’s perspective on this complex category.
