INTERGEM 2008: Nostalgia and Pioneering Spirit

An increase of exhibitors by about 8% and more trade visitors (+ 13%) than ever before crowded the exhibition halls on the hills above Idar-Oberstein. The positive visitors’ trend of October 3rd, the opening day, was continued throughout the following days, so that most of the time one could only move along the aisles when you followed the flow; and, as the general satisfaction among exhibitors proves, the visitors were generally very important and possessed considerable purchasing power. They came with the intention to buy and knew where they want to look for special stones, objects, or jewellery. All in all on the four trade fair days no less than 3.550 visitors came to see the products exhibited by the 165 participants in the trade fair.

In its 24th year INTERGEM succeeded once again to defend its unique position as the most important trade fair for the gemstone and jewellery industry in Germany. Besides the excellent organisation another contributing factor was certainly the fringe programme, which offered to the exhibitors a forum for presenting their merchandise to the press on the respective press conferences, and also served as a platform where the latest information from the trade referring to innovations, trends, and news can be shared. The trade fair is thus a classical hub and meeting place for the gemstone industry, and serves as an engine for the economical development also in the surrounding gemstone region.

This year the range of products displayed was enlarged by integrating the facet of gemstone processing machinery and equipment: this was met by such a high degree of interest among the visitors that one may well take an optimistic attitude concerning the planned trade fair for this segment next year.
The project will be organised under the headline ‘Gemtec’ and will open the range of trade shows and exhibitions in the new fairgrounds, which will also house INTERGEM in October next year.

Even better, more modern, more attractive: the trade fair organisers will make it possible that the 25th INTERGEM will become a truly remarkable event. If the 24th – this year’s trade fair – symbolises completing a project, then the 25th marks the first quarter of a century, symbolising expansion of achievements based on a strong foundation. This will certainly be possible in the new location, as there will be an up-to-date infrastructure there, so that access to the internet will be possible as well as unproblematic parking in especially planned areas or an even better security standard for the valuable exhibits. So it is only with a little bit of nostalgia that INTERGEM turns its back on the old Budau fairground, to make its permanent home in the new halls.
