Obituary – Leonard Millington

08 Feb 1929 – 04 Jan 2013

It is with regret that we announce the passing of Leonard John Millington, founder and proprietor of Birmingham silversmiths, L.J. Millington.  He passed away peacefully at midnight on Friday 4th January after a short illness. He was 83 years of age.

Len spent his entire working life in the jewellery quarter serving his apprenticeship with silversmiths, A.L Davenport in the famous “Pelican” building on Great Hampton Street before moving to Sanders & Mackenzie in Spencer Street.

Primarily Len was a ‘metal spinner’ and it was his skill in spinning light gauge silver which formed the bedrock of his success throughout his career.

In 1964 he decided to set up his own silversmithing company which expanded throughout the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s becoming one of the largest producers of silverware in the U.K.

Len was still active within L.J. Millington’s until July 2012 when he retired from the business due to ill health.

Len is survived by his wife Mary and two sons Steven and Kevin.
