Departure of Craig Cooper, Executive Director of City Operations

Birmingham City Council has announced the departure of Craig Cooper, Executive Director of City Operations, who will be leaving in June 2025 for a new role.

Craig joined Birmingham City Council initially in 2020 and quickly became a pivotal figure in the city. His leadership was instrumental in the successful delivery of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, which attracted over five million visitors and significantly boosted the city’s global profile.

He rejoined the council in 2023 to take the role of Executive Director of City Operations. Under his guidance, the City Operations team provided essential services to residents, including public protection, highways, waste services, community safety, and more.
Craig will continue his role as lead officer until his departure, where Richard Brooks will step in for an interim period whilst the recruitment process takes place. Richard joined the council in 2021 and has worked closely with Craig in the City Operations directorate, including during this period of industrial action, Richard will step into the lead following a detailed handover period.

Councillor John Cotton, Leader of Birmingham City Council, said: “Craig has been an exceptional leader and a dedicated public servant. His contributions to the council and the city have been invaluable. We are grateful for his service and wish him all the best in his future endeavours.”

Reflecting on his time at Birmingham City Council, Craig Cooper said: “It has been a privilege to serve the people of Birmingham. I am proud of what we have achieved together. I leave knowing that the City Operations team is well-equipped to continue delivering high-quality services to our residents.”

The council will begin the search for a new Strategic Director of City Operations immediately.
