Editorial May 2026

Shared workspace is now quite commonplace and with more people than ever working from home and only venturing into work to meet up is seeing less use of traditional offices and more of shared workspaces rentable by the hour, day or just a few days per month.

The latest workspace is by The Birmingham Assay office and is designed to offer jewellery professionals a community environment and access to specialised screening equipment. With flexible membership options, including pay-as-you-go access as well as part-time and full-time memberships, Assay Hub allows access to technical kit required for verification that to most isn’t readily available, or affordable. Assay hub is designed to change all that. See story inside.

I also work from home these day, although I do miss the convenience of having an office, but needs have changed so much over the years with just about everything arriving by email means an office is not really needed, whereas in the good old days post and a steady stream of customers coming to reception to book adverts meant an office was a necessity.

Distribution of the magazine has its own challenges working from home. For convenience an office in the JQ would be good – but I would only use it for one week a month, but even then I would hardly be using it fully – being out and about in the Jewellery Quarter delivering, and finding somewhere that can take delivery of a dozen or more heavy boxes of magazines rather than delivered to my home is nearly impossible.
