Linocut, Myths and Poems
These recent linocuts by Eric Gaskell employ Greek myth and poetry as a starting point for exploring the manipulation of colour, shape, and pattern.
The abstraction of reality is equally significant, with the inclusion of realistic elements such as boats and trees serving as a means to avoid complete abstraction. These compositions provide Gaskell with ample freedom to develop diverse descriptive techniques for the clouds, water, and land elements.

Event Details
Martin Brent Guest graduated with an MA in Photography from Falmouth University in 2020.
He is a lens-based artist working with analogue and digital photography and technology, often recording what is unaltered, with an emphasis on light and shade and the interactions of natural and artificial light, but also what is not, using tableau techniques to achieve this.
He is currently investigating the notion of national identity, nation state and artificial borders by reorganising and reframing found scenes, geographically and sometimes chronologically, to create new places, sometimes with absurd juxtapositions.
Martin is inspired by the work of Jeff Wall, Gregory Crewdson, Andreas Gursky, William Eggleston and The New Topographics collective.
The Snow Trees 2009
The Snow Trees celebrate a man made moment over sixty years in its evolution but only being completed by the temporary covering of snow that lasted no more than 24 hours.
This was the silent moment just after the last flakes of had fallen.
Possibly planted as a commercial venture by long forgotten foresters the trees in their near perfect ranks await a harvest that never came.
The main composition represents choice, to the right a safe path into the light, an easy route that can easily be made but no discovery or mystery awaits, to the left the path is soon lost amongst the trees, their uniformity becoming confused, the path no longer clear, the light decreasing.
Each path has a guardian, a dominant force that prevents us moving forward until the options and possible consequences are considered the view ahead blocked, maybe a little risk is required just to leave where we now stand, this is where the artist leaves the viewer in the silence of the forest.
The artist has learned that in recent months, the forest portrayed here has tragically been felled, thus this image represents an historic document and truly unrepeatable moment. Only five of these panoramas will ever exist in this form, one will be retained by the artist, two are sold and within collections, one of the them belonging to the drummer of a very well known British rock band.
Miami Pastels
To honour the buildings as they once were, Martin incorporates indicators of contemporary life in his photographs of Miami South Beach’s Art Deco district.
The images are the artist’s reaction to seeing the buildings as individual survivors of the era, Brent was saddened to find the district run down and cracking at the edges with Miami’s changing reputation, these buildings memorialise a bygone era. The district contains 950 historic buildings in the Art Deco, Mediterranean Revival, and Miami Modern style.
The distinct pastel colours are emphasised by the artist, giving the works a timeless quality and the feel of Art Deco illustrations and publications of the time.

Wendy Campbell-Briggs investigates the idea of collecting and collections, linking historic and contemporary practice. Using the simplicity of ceramic forms to express the fragility of our environment, she creates one-off sculptural pieces as well as artworks in series.
Her aim is to make the work visually engaging whilst communicating an important environmental message about the consequences of global warming. We now understand this has the potential to cause extinctions in a majority of the world’s valuable ecosystems resulting in catastrophic species loss. As a metaphor for this loss, Wendy uses lachrymatories, otherwise known as tear bottles, which were used during the Roman period to collect the tears of mourners.

Mapping the Archive, Birmingham’s Journey Through the RBSA Permanent Collection focuses on the changing face of Birmingham’s cityscape, travelling through its architectural history by way of the Society’s Permanent Collection.
Work dating back as far as 1814, the same year that the RBSA’s earliest incarnation the Birmingham Academy of Arts was born, are displayed alongside artwork depicting the second city’s current landscape, and there are some notable names amongst the artists included.
The Society of Arts engraving by Thomas Radclyffe (active 1817 – 1830) dating from c.1830 and Charles Walter Radclyffe’s (1817 – 1903) c.1840 lithograph View of New Street, Portico of the RBSA and Town Hall deservedly take their place, with Frank T Lockwood’s (1895 – 1961) Old Houses Near the Crescent from 1952.
As well as these gems, visitors to the exhibition will also be able to enjoy works depicting other Birmingham locations, including Digbeth and Deritend, Broad Street, Chamberlain Square, Piccadilly Arcade, and Moseley Road School of Art, to name but a few. They will see buildings which remain, as well as those which no longer stand, reminding us that the much-maligned Birmingham is a beautiful city worth celebrating and championing.

Event Details
The Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers is one of the world’s premier organisations representing the work and interests of printmakers.
All Members of the Society are practising professional printmakers, elected by a panel of their peers.
This exhibition shows a cross section of work by the current Membership, and highlights the enormous diversity of techniques and approaches used by RE Fellows and Associates.
Known initially as the Society of Painter-Etchers, the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers was founded by Sir Frances Seymour Haden in 1880 as a reaction to the Royal Academy of Arts’ reluctance to exhibit etchings and engravings. Following Queen Victoria granting the royal prefix in 1888, the group became the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers. In 1991 the name was changed again to embrace the broader range of printmaking practices, however the abbreviation RE was retained as both an identity and the qualifying letters that follow an elected Member’s name.
The RE is extremely proud of its history and the many eminent past Members who have contributed to the Society from its inception to the present day.

Established in 1881, JW Evans is one of the most complete surviving historic factories in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter. To walk into the factory today is to enter a lost industrial world.
Behind the frontage of four terraced houses, the workshops retain their original drop stamps and fly presses. They are packed with thousands of dies for the manufacture of silverware, as well as the whole of the working equipment, stock and records of the business.
Tours of JW Evans are available on a set number of days. The size of the property means these are limited to 10 people per tour and must be booked in advance. If you would like to attend a tour, please on the English Heritage web site here.
Minimum age for the tours is 16.
We advise that unfortunately the tour is not suitable for those with poor mobility due to the uneven floors, narrow walkways and steep stairs across the building. As an enclosed site with compact spaces, wearing a face covering is encouraged, but not mandatory.

Event Details
Debbie Baird and Brian Wood are figurative oil painters who studied together and have previously exhibited with other artists in London.
Both artists share an interest in expressing the essence of the individual, and the nature of their relationship with the world. Each has their own approach, creating a mix of vibrant emotive images and powerful social commentary.
Debbie’s work combines oil paint with collage, creating interest and complexity to enrich her narrative on the way our identities are coloured by our backgrounds.
Brian describes his process as ‘painting conversations’, between himself, his subjects, and the viewer. He builds narratives on the impact of power: how it is used and misused, and how this shapes who we are.
Debbie and Brian will be talking about their work and their practice at a Private View to be held mid-way through the exhibition.

Cristina Gardiner ARBSA is a landscape painter whose work crosses between abstraction and representation, borne from strong emotions in response to place.
In her exhibition Transitory Landscapes, Cristina draws on three instances: Estuarine, time; Urban, space; and Elemental, light and emotion, exploring her interest in post-industrial/urban sites and abstraction.
Cristina’s work starts with her experiences of a place, during which she records sketches, notes, and photographs, which are then reimagined in the studio. In real life the sites are already changing, but through Cristina’s reinterpretation, the ‘places’ acquire different meanings, containing edges and structures as markers of their essence.
The concept of ‘transience’ and of nothing staying the same is not new, but it retains a string fascination in Cristina’s view because continuous change and transformation embody the essence of the human condition. From the inevitable passing of time and physical transformations, to cultural and social shifts, changes are inevitable.

Gather Complete Information: Collect all available information about your ancestor, including full name, birth and death years, and any additional identifying details such as middle names or maiden names.
The Importance of Knowing Your Ancestors’ Birth and Death Years
Ensuring Accurate Grave Identification
When it comes to tracing your lineage and paying respects to your ancestors, accuracy is paramount. One critical piece of information that can greatly aid in locating your ancestor’s grave is knowing their year of birth and year of death. This knowledge not only helps in distinguishing your ancestor from others with the same name but also ensures that your visit is meaningful and accurate.
Why Birth and Death Years Matter
Knowing the birth and death years of your ancestor is essential, we advise purchasing a death certificate before looking for a burial.Accurate Identification: Cemeteries often contain multiple individuals with the same or similar names. By knowing the exact years of birth and death, you can confidently identify your ancestor’s grave, avoiding confusion and potential distress.Location of gravesSubject to availability of volunteers on the day, we may be able to show you may be able to show you your ancestors’ resting place.ONE THE SAME DAYGuided interior catacombs toursKey Hill catacomb chambers tours.Warstone Lane underground tunnel tour. The meeting point for all tours on this ONE DAY ONLY is inside Warstone Lane Cemetery, Vyse StreetWhen planning to book both catacomb tours, it is crucial to allocate adequate time for the duration of each tour, re-checking in at the stall to collect your second admittance badge, and walking from one cemetery to another. The Necks are one of the great cult bands of Australia and The Jam House is truly honoured to have them perform here for the first time.
Chris Abrahams (piano), Tony Buck (drums), and Lloyd Swanton (bass) conjure a chemistry together that defies description in orthodox terms.
Featuring lengthy pieces which slowly unravel in the most mesmerising fashion, frequently underpinned by an insistent deep groove, the eighteen albums by The Necks stand up to re-listening time and time again.
The deceptive simplicity of their music throws forth new charms on each hearing. Not entirely avant-garde, nor minimalist, nor ambient, nor jazz, the music of The Necks is possibly unique in the world today.
“A magic act masquerading as a piano trio, this Australian group delivers long-form improvisations that shift with such patient beauty that it casts a bit of a trance. You’ll seldom spend an hour that passes so quickly — and rewardingly.” Los Angeles Times
Doors open at 6pm

The doors will open at 6pm, for a candlelit tour that starts promptly at 6:45pm. The tour lasts for around an hour and a quarter; please wrap up warm as the museum can be cold.

(Please note that food and drinks are not permitted within the museum space, so must be consumed in the café before the tour.)
The Coffin Works preserves the contents of the former Newman Brothers’ manufactory, which opened in 1894 and finally closed its doors in 1998. The shelves and workbenches are full of original stock and tools of the trade, and some of the original machinery is working again so that you can truly experience how this Jewellery Quarter firm once operated. Newman Brothers produced some of the world’s finest coffin furniture, including the fittings for the funerals of Winston Churchill, the Queen Mother and Princess Diana.

World Première this Halloween
The house always wins as the curse returns…
The fourth instalment of James Williams’ hit horror series launches in Birmingham this spooky season.
Birmingham, dare you partake in the most terrifying tale yet? From the creators of The Wicked Lady, The Orphanage and The Witching Hour comes another terrifying theatrical horror experience, just in time for Halloween.
A crumbling house. A mysterious host. A game they will never forget.
When a group of strangers receive an invitation to an abandoned estate, curiosity outweighs caution. Promised one night of high-stakes entertainment, they enter willingly but the game quickly slips into something much darker.
Unseen forces begin to stir. Ancient rules are broken. One by one, the players realise they are not here by chance and the odds are stacked against them.
In this cursed landscape, they are not just playing the game – they are the game. Winning may be their only chance of survival because in The Devil’s Game… the house always wins.
Do you dare take your seat at the table?
This production contains moments of extreme shock and tension and is recommended for those aged 14+. Strobe lighting, loud noise, adult themes and strong language are present at points throughout.
