The RBSA Summer Show is the Society’s biggest open call of the year and attracts submissions from artists based all around the globe. Displayed over all three floors of the Gallery, this exhibition does not limit artists to a theme or technique, the result being a highly diverse show with a multitude of approaches represented.
As Birmingham’s equivalent to the Royal Academy Summer Show, this exhibition provides an excellent opportunity for artists to showcase their work in the city’s foremost contemporary art gallery. First time exhibitors can expect to find their work amongst that of experienced RBSA Members and Associates, and, for many, the RBSA Summer Show can form the start of their own journey to Membership.
Selection for the exhibition is by an experienced panel of RBSA Members and Associates.
The following prizes will be awarded:
- First Prize: £600
- Second Prize: £300
- Up to six highly commended certificates will also be awarded.
- All prizes have been kindly donated by Clive Beardsmore, Friend and long time supporter of the RBSA.
Preview Evening: Thursday 18 June 6.00pm – 8.00pm

Join us for a summer evening of open-air theatre in the historic courtyard of the Coffin Works.
Once the centre of daily life at the factory, bustling with noise and industry, this atmospheric space now becomes the setting for a special performance of She Stoops to Conquer, brought to us by The Crescent Theatre Company as part of their Summer Tour 2026.
The performance will take place in the courtyard, with seating provided and our bar and café open throughout the evening. Arrive early for a drink, enjoy the show, and settle in for a night that’s a little out of the ordinary.
The Crescent Theatre Presents… She Stoops to Conquer
“Ask me no questions, and I’ll tell you no fibs.”
Oliver Goldsmith’s much-loved comedy of manners is one of the great plays of the English stage. An ambitious stepmother, impassioned sweethearts, a pragmatic father and a pair of star-crossed lovers are sent spinning through a hilarious comedy of errors by the mischievous Tony Lumpkin.
Charles Marlow has been invited to visit the Hardcastles’ country home to consider a possible engagement to their daughter, Kate. On the way, however, Marlow and his companion Hastings are misled by Kate’s step-brother Tony, who convinces them that the Hardcastle house is actually a country inn.
What follows is a night of comic confusion, as Marlow mistakes Mr Hardcastle for an innkeeper and Kate for a barmaid—an error she happily encourages. Meanwhile, Kate’s cousin Constance plots to elope with Hastings, if only she can retrieve her jewels from her watchful aunt.
Will the mistakes of the night be uncovered before it’s too late?
The Doors will open at 6.20pm and the performance will start at 7pm, with a running time of 2 hours and 20 mins.

Birmingham in the 19th-century was hailed as the ‘workshop of the world’. The Jewellery Quarter was its busy hub, producing jewellery, silver and tableware.
About 40% of British jewellery is still made there. Behind a frontage of terraced houses, J.W.Evans Silver Factory is among its most complete surviving historic factories. Crammed with tools and equipment, it’s preserved as if the workers might return at any minute.
Entry to J.W Evans is through guided tours only and advance booking is essential. Please arrive at the time on your booking as tours start promptly.
Note there are two tours on the day below starting at 11.00am and 13.30pm
We advise that unfortunately, the tour is not suitable for those with poor mobility, due to the uneven floors, narrow walkways, and steep stairs across the building. Minimum age for the tours is 16 years old.
You can book online until 9am on the day of your visit. Tickets are free for members – just remember to bring your English Heritage membership card. You can join as a member online or during your visit.

Event Details
We’re so excited to be welcoming Birmingham-based author Sasha Butler to talk about her debut novel “The Marriage Contract”.
Sasha will be giving a brief talk about her novel, and will be able to answer any questions from attendees.
Alongside this, we’re excited to be hosting another Social Book Swap. Please bring a book (or two, or three!) and swap it with someone else’s!
So, join us between 2pm – 5pm (talk to begin at approximately 2.30pm) in the outdoor seating area at Temper and Brown, for a great afternoon discussing and swapping books!
About The Marriage Contract:
Worcestershire, 1577. Eliza Litton, a talented artist, has loved Francis since they were children. But when he vanishes after a night at the inn, her brutal father forces her to marry Edmund, a wealthy and distant stranger.
At first, Eliza grieves for Francis, her heart caught in the past. But Edmund surprises her – with kindness, encouragement, and a life she never dared imagine. Slowly, she begins to fall for the man she never chose.
Far away, Francis fights to return to her. But when Eliza uncovers a secret that shatters her fragile peace, she must decide where her heart truly lies – and what she is willing to risk for love.
The Marriage Contract is a sweeping Elizabethan love story about lost dreams, second chances, and the courage it takes to choose your own path.
About Sasha Butler:
Sasha Butler’s debut novel The Marriage Contract (Salt) was published in October 2025, and was listed as a Sunday Times best historical fiction book of 2025 and awarded ‘Best historical fiction to take you back in time’ by the 2025 Cosmopolitan Book Awards. The Body Snatcher & The Hanged Man’s Bride – Edinburgh Preview Double Bill
Robert Louis Stevenson: The Body Snatcher
A chilling tale of greed, guilt and the macabre, “The Body Snatcher” exposes one of the darkest truths in history – the grisly pursuits of the so-called Resurrection Men.
When medical student Fettes is recruited to assist the enigmatic scholar Wolfe Macfarlane, a chilling chain of events is set in motion. To what lengths will they go for the advancement of medical knowledge?
This stunning adaptation brings to the stage Stevenson’s masterfully weaved story of suspense and morality – exploring the dark depths of human ambition and its terrifying consequences.
Charles Dickens: The Hanged Man’s Bride
‘She comes towards me on the floor; always approaching; never coming nearer; always visible as if by moonlight whether the moon shines or not.’
A writer struggling to reignite his creative vision. A real-life crime. And a visit to a supposedly haunted inn. As darkness descends, a ghostly tale is played out. But what is real and what is not?
A tale of passion, deceit and the ethereal dance between the realms of life and death as the Hanged Man’s Bride beckons from the shadows of the past.

Event Details
For the first time ever, the Coffin Works and the Pen Museum unite to plunge you back into the streets of 1915 Birmingham. The “Shell Crisis” is at its peak, and the Jewellery Quarter’s factories are close to boiling point. A worker has been found dead, and the evidence points towards the “Underworld” of the Albert Works and the silent workshops of the Fleet Street Coffin Works. The investigation is in your hands.
Step into a living history experience to interrogate the desperate and the dangerous. From the clatter of the pen presses to the shadows of the shroud room, you must search the evidence and separate the truthful from the liars. Will you uncover the truth before the morning whistle blows, or will the secrets of the Quarter stay buried forever?
This event will begin at the Pen Museum and finish at the Coffin Works. There will be a short walk between the museums, taking roughly 10 minutes. Refreshments, including tea, coffee and biscuits, will be available before and in a halfway interval. Please get in touch if you have any allergies or dietary requirements we should be aware of.
Date: Saturday 11th July
Time: 6:30pm–9:30pm (Doors open at 6:00pm)

Henry V and The Prussian Officer- Edinburgh Preview Double Bill
William Shakespeare: Henry V
A single actor takes the field in this electrifying retelling of Shakespeare’s Henry V, embodying kings, comrades, and enemies alike. With nothing but language, imagination, and sheer force of performance, the epic story of power, war, and responsibility is distilled to its beating heart.
Thrones rise and fall, battles roar, and doubts whisper in the shadows as one man channels the voices of an entire world. Intimate yet monumental, Ben Mills-Wood’s interpretation of Henry V strips away spectacle to reveal the cost of leadership, the thrill of rhetoric, and the fragile humanity behind a legendary king.
D.H. Lawrence: The Prussian Officer
Power. Desire. Control. Set within a harsh military world, The Prussian Officer charts the explosive relationship between a young orderly and his commanding officer. What starts as obedience twists into dangerous obsession as authority and attraction collide. Ben Mills‑Wood’s charged new adaptation of D.H. Lawrence’s story shines a fierce light on repression, class, and the human cost of desire denied. With striking performances and bold direction, this taut psychological drama reveals how passion, when silenced, becomes destructive — a gripping battle between control and surrender that leaves lasting scars.

Sherlock Holmes: The Speckled Band
“Oh my God. It was the band. The specked band!”
A dying woman’s mysterious last words and a plea for help from her sister, lead Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson to a crumbling country house. How did a young woman die there with no obvious cause of death, and why does her sister believe she will be next? With a seemingly locked room mystery on his hands, Holmes must solve one of the darkest and most baffling cases of his career. Adapted from the short story by Arthur Conan Doyle this is Sherlock Holmes at his finest!
Charles Dickens: The Signalman
Charles Dickens’ classic ghost story. When a traveller chances upon a solitary railway signalman he is drawn into a tale of ghostly premonitions, tragic occurrences and human solitude that echoes the contrasting Victorian feelings towards the nascent railway system.
Published in 1866 Dickens likely based the story on the incident of the Clayton Tunnel crash that occurred 5 years prior, at the time it was the worst accident on the British railway system. A train ran into the back of another inside the tunnel, killing 23 and injuring 176 passengers.

Under the Tree presents – The Careless Carless Case
As Part of Birmingham Fest
Jam jars, daydreams, and a dash of deception! In 1886 Wolverhampton, young Agnes Carless falls headfirst into mischief when a mysterious lodger arrives. Inspired by a real Victorian scandal uncovered through genealogical research, this charming comedy proves that even the quietest lives can stir up the most unexpected adventures.
At the heart of this true 1886 tale is Agnes Bertha Carless, a spirited 17-year-old maid with a vivid imagination and a thirst for more than her working-class life in Wolverhampton can offer. When Arthur Fegan, a smooth-talking lodger with secrets of his own, arrives at the Carless home, Agnes is swept into a whirlwind of flattery, fantasy, and forbidden romance. These daring young women ascended the skies sitting on a trapeze hanging f below the balloon, up to astonishing heights, of over 5000 feet. Zander Gibney presents – The Poet of Lufatia
As Part of Birmingham Fest
The Poet of Lufatia is the debut play of American writer, actor, and director Zander Gibney. Zander recently graduated from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire’s Master of Fine Arts–Acting program. Now based in Birmingham, Zander is thrilled to be bringing this passion project to Birmingham Fest with a cast of talented, locally based actors.
Inspired by Shakespeare’s comedies and Noël Coward’s style, The Poet of Lufatia is a farce of convoluted communication about the amount people will say to not have to say anything at all.
Legend says the Princess of Lufatia can only be wooed by a man who writes 1,000 letters––the “Poet of Lufatia.” Now that the King has called for this legend to be fulfilled, a self-righteous poet named Michael aims to claim the title of Poet and the princess as his own. Unfortunately, to reach his goal Michael must contend with a naïve courier, a pair of conniving sisters, clothes-swapping twin brothers, his sister’s impending marriage, a mail fraud plot that could bring down the entire kingdom, and––worst of all––rampant miscommunication.
Will anyone be married? Will Lufatia be saved from mail fraud? And will anyone genuinely speak from their heart? Find out in The Poet of Lufatia: A new comedy about old letters.

As Part of Birmingham Fest
“We thought the cave was safe. That’s what we told each other when we saw the mouth of it yawning open in the cliffside. Somewhere we could be free to be ourselves”
It’s 2052, and five people have found their way to a refuge hidden in the rocks, each with their own reason for fleeing the oppression of the city. Their rural communal life seems idyllic, until one day Ezekiel suddenly disappears, shattering the trust that has bound them and testing how much of what they tried to escape they have really left behind.
Boundless is a dynamic piece of devised theatre reflecting on the fragility of freedom, by a new generation of makers.

Event Details
Calligraphy has become a popular hobby for many, allowing individuals to express creativity through elegant lettering. For those keen to dive deeper, calligraphy classes offer an excellent way to refine skills and learn new techniques. These classes cater to various skill levels, ensuring everyone can benefit.
Learning Calligraphy
miniscule.
Anglo-Saxon pointed miniscule refers to a specific style of the Insular minuscule scripts, characterized by a “pointed” or angular appearance. It developed in 8th-century England and was used to write both Latin and Old English texts. Its notable features include angular curves, triangular serifs, and ascenders/descenders that appear “split” or sharpened.
You will be learning how to write this in a modernised form that is well suited as a calligraphic hand today, and at the same time learning how to use a broad edged metal dip pen.
Enrolling in calligraphy classes helps master these techniques.
Wikipedia
Held at the Pen Museum, the classes are designed for both beginners and more experienced calligraphers. These calligraphy classes provide a unique opportunity to learn the key elements of calligraphy and take information away to continue developing your style at home. Some materials will be provided, and calligraphy products can be purchased from the Museum shop.
- 12 Spaces are available for each session:
- Session 1: 12:00pm – 1:30pm
- Session 2: 2:00pm – 3:30pm
- £12.75 per session.
- No requirement to book both sessions.
- Museum admission is not included.
- Course suitable for adults only. Overall, calligraphy classes are an enriching experience.

Expect thunderous drums, face-melting guitar, and enough doom-laden groove to make even Ozzy raise an eyebrow. Grab your mates, polish your black leather, and prepare for a night that’ll shake Birmingham harder than a misplaced bass amp.
Don’t miss it. Be there. Be loud.
