Editorial Coronavirus Special

The extraordinary times that we are all living in makes for extraordinary things, and we are no exception, as – rather suddenly, decided to do something extraordinary ourselves, a ‘special’ issue of The Hockley Flyer.

Why might your ask? As we were distributing the March 2020 issue, the terrible news from around the world about the Coronavirus spreading was sending alarm bells that we needed to get the March issue out quickly, and locally the government were ordering new measures each day meant there were cancellations galore, making our 5 page event guide null and void! We did manage to get all the March magazines out, with just the odd exceptions where some had already shut up shop, or were so close to there was little point leaving any copies.

Early during the lockdown, we realised we needed something of a stop gap between the amazingly outdated March issue of just three weeks ago at the time of writing, and the uncertain future with the April issue. If anything, this is an updated March issue. With so much news to share we worked fast to bring out this special issue for you on what measures you need to know and have the relevant stuff in one place. We have not included the financial news as at the time of writing as much was still to be announced, such as help for self-employed.

Many thanks to our advertisers, without whom The Hockley Flyer simply would not exist, and although the adverts in this issue are virtually the same as the original March issue, the advertisers themselves may be closed completely, working at their premises but not open for any visitors, have severe restrictions for visitors, home-working online, or still open for takeaways only etc. We have highlighted many in our news but might have missed a few (apologies). Email or phone them to find out the situation if you need any of their services or products.

Our publishing date is the 15th of each month, which in April is mid Easter break so would have to adjust anyway, but the lockdown which started on 23rd March for 3 weeks is due to be reviewed around 13th April. With Easter and the lockdown, the April issue will invariably be late, even if the lockdown restrictions are lifted, or the very least eased for manufacturing. It is possible the leisure industries may take a little longer before restrictions are eased or lifted for those.

We hope you find this extra issue interesting, with some very useful information at close hand, some scary stuff with the odd bit of fun poked at the situation.

Above all keep well (and your distance – YES YOU!) and stay safe.

One last thing your usual Editor Marie, is fine and well, and we are keeping her in a cupboard after her 91st birthday so she will have plenty to go an about in the next editorial….
