The National Association of Jewellers (NAJ) highlights strategic direction following its 2025 Annual General Meeting in Birmingham. Gary Williams, Managing Director of Mastermelt, has been appointed as President for the term 2025–2027.

He succeeds Gary Wroe, whose extensive service as both Chair and President has shaped the NAJ’s path over recent years. While stepping down from the presidency, Wroe has been co-opted back onto the National Committee and will continue to support the Executive Committee while representing manufacturing members and maintaining vital links with the British Allied Trades Federation (BATF).

Reflecting on his presidency, Gary Wroe commented, “It’s been a privilege to help steer the Association through challenges and growth. I’m proud of what we’ve accomplished together and delighted to continue contributing to the NAJ’s ongoing success from the National Committee.”

Incoming President Gary Williams added, “The NAJ has never been more relevant or more needed. I’m honoured to take up the mantle, and look forward to working with the National Committee, staff, and our members to continue building a stronger, united, and progressive industry.”

The AGM also saw the appointment of Mehdi Saadian as Vice Chair for 2025–2026 and the election of new National Committee members Neil Ventura and Kerry Sanders. Chris Oliver was also re-elected for a further term.
Adam Jacobs, NAJ Chair, expressed his gratitude to David Doyle, who stepped down from the National Committee, “This year, we bid farewell to David Doyle from the National Committee, though we’re fortunate he’ll continue to support the Executive Committee. As the longest-serving President in our history, David’s contribution has been hugely significant. His commitment to the Association and charitable work beyond it is inspirational.”

In his AGM address, Jacobs highlighted a year of growth and renewal, with NAJ membership reaching 1,550 businesses and a marked improvement in member retention. The Association has published or updated eleven Codes of Practice and Guidance Notes in the past year alone, bolstering its reputation as a leader in professional standards and compliance.

Other key developments include the continued success of the JET programme of education courses, the introduction of the JET Management & Leadership programme, and the expansion of endorsed training routes. The NAJ also welcomed three new staff in 2025, strengthening member services and programme delivery.

Looking to the future, the NAJ held its first strategic planning day in four years, identifying four key areas of focus: legislation and compliance, sustainability, recruitment and skills development, and business life cycle support. Member consultation will continue through the summer and autumn to ensure targeted programmes meet the needs of the trade.
Jacobs concluded with a call to action, “If you care about our industry and want to shape its future, there’s a place for you here. Whether through the National Committee or our specialist working groups, we’re always looking for passionate, talented people to get involved.”
