2003 Goldsmith’s Craftsmanship & Design Awards

The 2003 Goldsmiths’ Craftsmanship & Design Awards, organised by the Goldsmiths’ Craft and Design Council, with the support of The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths and other companies and individuals from within the industry, will culminate in an exhibition of the best competition entries to take place at Goldsmiths’ Hall from Tuesday, March 4 to Friday, March 7.

This is an annual event and is part of the Goldsmiths’ Craft and Design Council’s ongoing programme to encourage and promote excellence in both craftsmanship and design among all those involved in goldsmithing, silversmithing, jewellery and the allied crafts, including trainees and students studying at universities and colleges.

The competition, now in its 95th year, is open to anyone in the United Kingdom engaged in designing and/or working with precious metals, gemstones and related materials. The 23 sections of the competition represent a variety of different skills, such as diamond mounting, enamelling, prototype production jewellery, model making, chasing, designing in platinum and two recently introduced sections include window design/display and technological innovation. Each section offers Gold, Silver and Commendation awards, with valuable certificates and cash prizes awarded to the winning entrants, in some cases supplemented with allocations of precious metals, gemstones and vouchers.

Individual awards include The Goldsmiths’ Company Award of £4,500 to be presented to the piece of finished work that is judged to have achieved the highest standards of both craftsmanship and design, and The Jacques Cartier Memorial Award for exceptional and outstanding craftsmanship. The latter is only awarded if the Council considers an entry to be of a high enough standard to justify the honour. The winner then has their name inscribed in the Jacques Cartier Memorial Award Gold Book and receives a gold replica of the book, in addition to £1,500.

The judges, comprising a panel of members from the Craft and Design Council and invited specialists, designers and craftsmen from among the trade, will announce the winners of the 2003 Goldsmiths’ Craftsmanship & Design Awards at an awards ceremony to be held at Goldsmiths’ Hall on the evening of Monday, March 3 (by invitation only).

A list of all the winning and commended entries will be published immediately after the awards ceremony.
The exhibition, which provides an intimate insight into the art of the silversmith and jeweller, will subsequently be on view to the public from Tuesday March 4 to Friday March 7 from 10.00am to 5.00pm, admission free.
