Editorial February 2022

Welcome to the latest issue of The Hockley Flyer

This issue sees a fresh look for many sections of the magazine. Some of the regular features have been axed. Sadly, the Classifieds and Business Pages have been the main casualties, the Classifieds section especially hardly ever used any more a victim of social media probably. I kept the service going but when you realise that 95% of the adverts are your own, its time to call it a day – at least for that section
Replacing the Business Pages are Small Ads, simple, effective and more options gives an alternative to ads in the display sections.
Things must change and so must the magazine, and this issue sees a return of the Heritage section to four pages, I am pleased about that but need to refile and digitise much of the history that is in the archives with a special thanks to Colin Giles for much of the stuff he has found.

Whilst researching some businesses there is truly little information about them. If they never had a story or press release printed, or advertised anywhere, there is little left behind in the archives. For instance, I remember a guy who do not believe in advertising at all. After about 20 years I was surprised to hear from him that he wanted to advertise – really “yes” he said, “I want to advertise my business as I don’t have any customers anymore!”
So do consider an advert, or even better – a story. Every business has a story, otherwise if your story is not interesting or different, why set up in business in the first place, go on…

The Hockley Flyer magazine if entirely funded by the advertising, but we could always do with a little bit more funding. The advertising not only pays for the design/printing, but also postage, delivery, all the associated paperwork/accounts, and research for the Heritage section. Our subscribers pay only a bit more then the postage/mailing costs, and the magazines are free - no cover price.
