NatWest Branch at 22 Frederick Street to Close

The RBS and NatWest Banks announced just before Christmas that they are closing 259 branches with a possible loss of 680 jobs. The closures include the NatWest branch at 22 Frederick Street.

For over 30 years The Hockley Flyer (and for 23 years The Jewellery Quarter Association) were run from our offices on the second floor of this Grade II Listed building (the listing also includes the inside fixtures and fittings).

About seven years ago NatWest sold the building to a firm in Gibraltar (who later went bankrupt) and is now in private hands. The Bank’s Lease must be due for renewal now (after 7 years) and we are convinced they did not intend to renew anyway, especially when they cut their opening days.

Obviously, the cash machine will disappear, also the newly installed machine inside the bank. Just how will people pay cash/cheques into the bank in future without a branch?

The Hockley Flyer even negotiated a special concession for people banking at 22 Frederick Street whereby customers could park for a short time in the loading bay outside, providing they were inside the bank when the wardens were on patrol.

I just hope the building itself is made good when the signs and the cash point are removed!

Shame as at one time both Barclays and the NatWest were an integral part of the social/business activities in the Jewellery Quarter, hosting daytime and evening parties and very much involved with Jewellery Quarter Festivals…

The Hockley Flyer magazine if entirely funded by the advertising, but we could always do with a little bit more funding. The advertising not only pays for the design/printing, but also postage, delivery, all the associated paperwork/accounts, and research for the Heritage section. Our subscribers pay only a bit more then the postage/mailing costs, and the magazines are free - no cover price.
