Shortlist Announced For Weston Beamor’s Annual Student Competition

Natalia Antunovity

Three students from The School of Jewellery at Birmingham City University have been short-listed to win the Birmingham casting house and 3D printing company Weston Beamor’s annual competition for jewellery design.

The students – Natalia Antunovity, Faith Pope and Zi Ye (aka Sophie) – who are all in their second year of study on the School’s HND in Jewellery and Silversmithing Course, were asked to design using the GemVision Matrix CAD software, a piece of jewellery of their choice, incorporating a choice of three semi-precious jewels – either a 4.55ct citrine, a 7.8 ct amethyst or a 9.52ct topaz.

They were also asked to produce a consumer-facing advertisement that could be used to market their designs.

The short-listed designs, which will now be made by Weston Beamor for display on its Stand Hall 17 G43, are all extremely different. Antunovity’s ‘Intimacy’ earrings in 18ct yellow gold which feature the citrine are the height of glamour and sophistication.

Zi Ye also offers glamour but her ‘Fatal Attraction’ cocktail ring uses an amethyst, surrounded by tiny feature green tsavorite garnets, in a more edgy, rock-chic style. While Faith Pope’s ‘A Stitch in Time’ pendant in 18ct yellow gold – which is also a sewing kit – catches the mood of the moment with its 1940’s style marketing and utilitarian purpose.

Her citrine pendant incorporates a bobbin of cotton while a small tube, which attaches to the fastening of the chain and hangs down the wearer’s back, provides a home for needles.

“We were knocked out, as usual, by the creativity of the entries and the high level of technical excellence the students achieved. Each design has something special. Natalia made excellent eye-catching use of the stones and her designs would sit well in any jewellers’ window.

Sophie, provided us with a high-quality CAD render of a complex design and made imaginative use of the stones, while Faith’s sewing kit idea is very much in vogue and demonstrated real attention to detail,” says Weston Beamor’s Head of Business Development, Glen Day.

The winning student’s name will be announced on Weston Beamor’s Stand at The Jewellery & Watch Show Birmingham at 2.00pm on Tuesday 4th February.

The winner will receive a £500 cash prize. The person in second place will receive £200 and the third prize will be £100. All are invited to have a week of work experience with Weston Beamor.

Speaking about the competition Gaynor Andrews – Course Tutor and Deputy Head of the School of Jewellery said, “This competition offers our students an invaluable opportunity to understand the workings of a commercial jewellery company.

They are invited to visit Weston Beamor’s premises prior to starting their design and to see for themselves exactly how designs are translated into finished pieces of jewellery. The work experience for the three winners is the most fantastic opportunity and one that will undoubtedly help them to pursue a successful career in the industry.”
