The ‘Jasper Carrott’ Tram

Birmingham comedian Jasper Carrott with Laura Shoaf from Transport for the West Midlands and Alejandro Moreno of the Midland Metro Alliance

On November 14th, 2019 Jasper Carrott (our own Birmingham-born comedian/presenter) was invited to name the first ever tram to stop at the new tram stop outside the Council House as part of the West Midlands Metro extension from Grand Central to Centenary Square.

Jasper, who was born in Birmingham, has always maintained close connections with Birmingham including, of course, the Jewellery Quarter and said, “It is a great honour.”

Jasper became a patron of the Pen Room after a visit to the museum with his family and on the invitation of Carl Chinn. Although not involved in the actual running of the museum he was an ambassador and he attended the launch of Brian Jones’ book in 2014.

Trams of course are nothing new to The Jewellery Quarter, but they did look somewhat different! See story in our Heritage Pages.

The Hockley Flyer magazine is entirely funded by the advertising, but could do with a little bit more funding. The advertising not only pays for the design/printing, but also postage, delivery, all the associated paperwork/accounts, and research for the Heritage section. Subscribers pay only a bit more than the postage/mailing costs, and the magazines are free - no cover price.
