A Dream Becomes a Reality

Michele White – Designer Jeweller writes…

‘At 85 Caroline Street, over the last couple of years, a dream has become a reality. An idea that was spawned several years ago is now coming to fruition.

The ground floor of a newly refurbished Apartment block has been converted into a Gallery. Behind the Gallery a large space has been fitted out to provide workshops.

When the ’Design Space’ scheme closed in April 2013 a valuable helping hand for Jewellery School graduates was lost.

I felt that after working in the Quarter for 30 years I would like to do something to help future graduates and so the idea was born. I was successful in gaining support from the European Regional Development Fund and have been able to develop a large area with six start-up benches and six self contained soundproof workspaces in various sizes.

The intention is to develop a creative community of people with skills who can interact and help one another in a pleasant and congenial environment. In good weather they will be able to sit outside in the courtyard and there is a kitchen/restroom where they can meet and mingle. Facilities also include a shower.

I am looking for jewellers who wish to start their own businesses. As there is 24 hour access it will be ideal for new graduates who will be working in the trade during normal office hours and wish to start producing their own designs outside these hours.

The self-contained workshops may be suitable for new or established businesses and are quite big enough to be shared. Indeed the largest one could be shared by four or five people and so maybe suitable for a small business with several employees.

The project has been quite nerve-racking and given me many sleepless nights as there has been so much to organise. Now as it is beginning to come to fruition it is becoming really exciting. Everybody who has been shown the premises, share my enthusiasm’.
