Chiltern Railways have successfully launched their brand new service from Birmingham Snow Hill, located in the heart of Colmore Business District (CBD), as part of a complete overhaul of their timetable. The train operator anticipates that the service will be a big hit with Birmingham business passengers, who will be able to take advantage of the fast intercity-style silver trains to and from the capital.
At peak times, corporate travellers can now step out of their office and board trains in the centre of the business district, enabling them to benefit from faster Mainline trains to the capital from Snow Hill station. The decision was taken following close consultation with Birmingham’s business community in order to develop services in line with their needs.
Whilst fast trains already operate from Birmingham Moor Street, there will now be fast trains from Birmingham Snow Hill to London between 0650 and 0915, reducing the overall journey time from Snow Hill by up to an impressive 22 minutes. All trains leaving London Marylebone between 1730 and 2200 will also stop at Birmingham Snow Hill, making it simple to return in the evening.
Chiltern Railways is also making it easier for Londoners to do business in Birmingham with the 0715 train arriving into Snow Hill at 0859.
Since the launch of Mainline last year, on-board facilities including free Wi-Fi, spacious seats and more plug sockets and tables have already proven to be popular with passengers. Commuters have also been tempted over to the Chiltern line by the train operator’s premium economy Business Zone, kitted out with all the features of first class travel but at a fraction of the cost. Passengers can simply upgrade their ticket on board by paying a supplement of £20 at peak times.
CBD chairman Gary Cardin said: “This is a significant gain for CBD’s business community and I’m delighted that Chiltern have listened and acted upon the comments raised at our focus groups. We recognise the important influence of transport to make our business district more accessible and connected. The rail service at Snow Hill Station to and from London will hopefully make a positive impact on the working days of people in the District and it’s fantastic that all Chiltern peak time trains to London will soon be running from Snow Hill.”
Thomas Ableman, Commercial Director at Chiltern Railways added, “Over the past year, we have seen a phenomenal increase in the numbers of passengers using our new Mainline service between Birmingham and London. By working in tandem with the business community, we are confident that we have transformed the service to Colmore Business District via Snow Hill to give business people a service that works for them. It will be the first time that the business district has inter-city style services direct to and from London and we known that these fast trains, combined with our great value fares, will result in more West Coast passengers permanently moving over to the Chiltern line.”
