Editorial March 2024

The Heritage section gets a boost this month with the inclusion of the awful news about a 10-year-old girl who was murdered in Vyse Street. Have you not heard about it? Probably not as it happened 127 years ago. It has taken me a while to get the research and story together, and some was done some years ago and it appears the source for these stories were from websites that are no longer available, which is a shame as just how much heritage stuff is disappearing?

The story is terribly sad and caused an outrage in the area at the time and not just locally, putting the page together even I had a tear or two in my eyes, even though the events were from 1896!

In fact, this whole issue seems to have been a tricky one to put together, as anyone who does creative work will know, the creative juices flow and work comes together quickly, even quicker than you anticipate, but occasionally what takes a matter of hours seems to take days. So here we are late with this issue going to the printers again!

Note to oneself – ‘Must do better’!

The Hockley Flyer magazine is entirely funded by the advertising, but could do with a little bit more funding. The advertising not only pays for the design/printing, but also postage, delivery, all the associated paperwork/accounts, and research for the Heritage section. Subscribers pay only a bit more than the postage/mailing costs, and the magazines are free - no cover price.
