Editorial September 2020

I just cannot believe it is so nearly Autumn already – where did the summer go?

Coronavirus – So many changes and so much confusion – the rules made by ‘experts’ change day by day and sometimes even by the hour, will it ever return to ‘normal’? Er – what was normal?

Free Advertising/Feature – a Great Offer
One of the most positive moves this month is the offer made by Presman Mastermelt – see advert.

Police -v- Traffic Wardens
We are getting many complaints that the JQ is not being ‘policed effectively’. Since the closure of the Vyse Street Police Station, there has been an increase in crime in the area, a lot caused by youths on mountain bikes and recently a valuable motorcycle was stolen which fortunately had a tracking device so was soon discovered – abandoned.
When walking around the JQ one cannot help noticing one, or even two, traffic wardens operating in almost every street, but it is exceedingly rare to see a policeman, even the two community policemen. I think it is time that this situation is improved.

Street Clutter
When Andy Munro was head of the JQ Regeneration Partnership his team regularly reported on what signage etc existed on every street in order to get rid of street clutter as some signs were ‘missing’ and others completely irrelevant and even misleading. There are now many such signs which could be removed. See item on illegal signs.

Final Draft of ‘Neighbourhood Plan’
I can’t urge you strongly enough to read this document (don’t bother with the Plain English’ version unless you have a microscope handy!) and comment on it within the time limit. Details inside.

The Hockley Flyer magazine if entirely funded by the advertising, but we could always do with a little bit more funding. The advertising not only pays for the design/printing, but also postage, delivery, all the associated paperwork/accounts, and research for the Heritage section. Our subscribers pay only a bit more then the postage/mailing costs, and the magazines are free - no cover price.
