MAXI PRIEST
Live at the Jam House
————————–
Thursday 5th September
British-born Maxi Priest is an International singing star who has had hits in the UK, Europe, and the States. In a reggae-fusion style, Maxi has performed and recorded with the likes of Sly and Robbie, Shaggy, Beres Hammond, Jazzie B, Apache Indian, Roberta Flack, Shurwayne Winchester, Shabba Ranks, Robin Trower, and Lee Ritenour.
The Jam House is so pleased and honoured to have an artiste of this stature to agree to perform for us in this, our 25th Anniversary year.
Maxi broke into the British charts in the mid-eighties, with a series of releases, including “Crazy Love”, “Some Guys Have All the Luck”, and then Top Five with “Wild World”.
An American Billboard number one with “Close to You” in 1990, then a duet with Roberta Flack, “Set the Night to Music”, reached the American Top Ten in 1991. His duet with Shaggy in 1996, “That Girl”, was also a hit in the United States, peaking at number twenty.
Tonight’s show is really the Best of Maxi, combining a lifetime of solo releases and significant collaborations, balancing hard-core reggae vibes with more mainstream sensibilities. A consummate performer and one of the most successful reggae fusion artistes of all time.

Jimmy Carpenter, saxophonist, singer-songwriter and arranger began his musical journey over 35 years ago. In the ’80s he toured the USA east coast with the renegade blues band, The Alka-Phonics and in the ’90s toured with the blues-rock band The Believers, with whom he learned about the music business.
Over the years Jimmy has toured internationally with Tinsley Ellis, Jimmy Thackery, Walter Wolfman Washington, Eric Lindell and others. In 2012 he joined Mike Zito, his long-time friend and musical cohort to record and tour as a member of Mike Zito and the Wheel.
In addition to touring nationally and internationally, Jimmy has written, arranged and recorded the horns for many artists and has gained a reputation as a master Blues, Rock-n-Roll and R&B saxophonist.
For this European and UK tour Jimmy has enlisted the late Sherman Robertson’s UK band, formerly known as Blues Move.

Event Details
For the first time since 2017, we see The Universal return to Brum.
The Universal are a four piece band from the North West of England. Born out of working class frustration they are equal parts fire, skill, swagger, attitude and energy. They may tip their hat to The Small Faces, The Who, The Beatles and The Kinks but they bring things right up to now with their own distinctive and innovative style.
They are renowned for their passionate and energetic live shows having played hundreds of live shows. They’ve played with everyone from Ian McLagan and Joe Strummer, to Ocean Colour Scene, Trio Valore, Steve Cradock, The Chords, The View, The Proclaimers, Secret Affair, The Real People ,From The Jam and The Zombies.
They’ve won awards for Best Album at the Galaxy Awards and have also been voted Best Live Band by Rock Realms. Leads singer Terry Shaughnessy and The Universal have also worked with producer Winston Rollins, The Jools Holland Rhythm and Blues Orchestra and with Tim Holmes of Death In Vegas
For many of us, seeing The Universal again is the return of old friends, for those who haven’t you are in for a real treat.
Principal support comes from local favourites The Good Water.
The Good Water’s fuzz fuelled guitar riffs, raw vintage organs and hypnotic drum beats, lay the foundations for their own unique style of psychedelic, indie, pop. Since forming in 2016, the lads quickly picked up local support from Brum Radio and gained fans at raucous shows around the Midlands. They blew audiences away supporting Mercury Rev, Super Fury Animals and Bill Ryder-Jones.
The trio’s brand of psychedelic indie rock grooves, phased analogue delay, and fuzzed up guitar riffs, is streamlined into tight retro-pop framework. Press has also been quick to spot their singles with rave reviews from tastemaker blogs and magazines. The bands singles have been strongly supported by Steve Lamacq and his 6 Music team. The tracks also secured plays from Radcliffe & Maconie and Tom Robinson on 6 Music. “If you like old school 60’s psych, bands like The Coral, you’ll love this.” – Steve Lamacq BBC 6 Music The band have picked up a number of tour supports including Canadian blues rockers The Sheepdogs. Selling out venues such as the The Workman’s Club – Dublin, The Fleece – Bristol, The Globe – Cardiff and Lafayette – London. Closer to home, The Good Water are consistently selling out headline shows in Birmingham and building up a strong fanbase. Steve Lamacq is a big fan of the band describing them as “if you like old school 60’s psych bands like The Coral, you’ll love this”

Event Details
Unique and timeless – the legend that is Steve Gibbons has withstood the fads and fashions of the music business for over four decades.
Analyse his music and superb self-penned songs and you’ll find the influences of blues, country, even psychedelia.
Born in Birmingham, Steve first came to prominence as the leader of The Uglys, an uncompromising outfit at the forefront of the City’s burgeoning 1960s music scene. By the early 1970s
he had formed the five-piece Steve Gibbons Band which enjoyed success in the singles charts and has been perennially popular on the live circuit ever since.
With a huge international following, Steve’s long career has encompassed 17 albums. Along the way he has worked and toured with many bands including The Who, Little Feat, Lynyrd Skynyrd and E.L.O. In 1981, SGB responded to an invitation from the German Democratic Republic and became the first western rock band to tour the major cities of the former East Germany.
Steve is an inspired songwriter and many of his songs feature colourful characters. The most notable cover of a Steve Gibbons song is the title track of Roger Daltrey’s album ‘One Of The Boys’.
Now here we are in 2024, bringing his band to The Actress and Bishop, what a show this will be.
