JQBID Helps to Secure Further Outdoor Seating

The JQBID has helped secure additional outdoor space for nine Jewellery Quarter venues and has repurposed the Golden Square to allow for more public seating.

Up to 60 people can now safely sit in the Jewellery Quarter’s Golden Square after 10 picnic benches were installed this month. The benches will be free to use 24/7 and will be in place until the end of September. The benches will increase the amount of outdoor seating in the Jewellery Quarter to help hospitality businesses, who either have limited or no outdoor dining space, offer food and drink to customers. The JQBID will also be supplying parasols and hope to bring live music to the Square over the summer months.

The Golden Square is just one of a number of locations in the Jewellery Quarter to have benefitted from additional outdoor seating.

Working with Birmingham City Council, the JQBID has partly closed the entrance to Livery Street from the Queensway allowing for local businesses, Arch 13, and Indian Street Brewery, to safely spill out and offer al-fresco dining.

Luke Crane comments: “Whilst a full road closure was what we had hoped for, due to works soon to be commencing in the Ludgate Hill car park, this was just not possible at this time. However, the closure to Livery Street from the Queensway will now stop vehicles using this route as a cut through and provide a safer place for people to dine outside.”

Venues on St Paul’s Square have also benefitted from additional furniture. Saint Paul’s House has installed eight picnic benches at the front of their venue which overlooks St Paul’s Church. Further along the square, both Saint Kitchen and Soda Bread Cafe can now offer outdoor dining through the suspension of underused parking bays; and along Ludgate Hill, The Boogie Shed will soon be able to offer additional seating outside its venue along Water Street.

With Coffee Tales, Damascena and 1000 Trades also benefitting from temporary pavement licences, the Jewellery Quarter now has over 25 venues where visitors can safely dine outside.

Luke comments: “The Jewellery Quarter’s hospitality offering has always been one of the best in Birmingham. With so many venues forced to close over the last 18 months, I’m pleased that we’ve been able to support our businesses in implementing these new measures.
Installing benches on The Golden Square will also allow for us to make better use of our public spaces and create safe areas where friends and family can meet up and purchase food and drink from local venues.”
