PARKING UPDATE – Workers’ Permits

At the suggestion of the JQA, a ‘Workers Permit’ scheme has been introduced by the City Council to allow workers in the Quarter to park in the main Vyse Street Car Park at a reduced rate.

186 spaces have been allocated for this scheme and at the time of writing this news item, 120 spaces have been taken. The Council say they have about 60 spaces still available but it will be very much ‘first come – first served’, so get cracking if you want a space.

The number to ring is 303 6421 or fax 464 4469 to obtain an application form – don’t hang about, or you may lose out! The cost is £230 per annum.

Important Date:
A provisional date of 7th March has been fixed for a ‘Parking Surgery’ at the JQRP offices, 57 Frederick Street. The reason for this Surgery is a ‘last chance’ to look at the proposed changes to the on street parking in the Quarter. Some of the issues are:

(a) There will be no FREE on street parking bays – i.e. NO FREE ALL DAY OR 2 HOUR BAYS! Every on street parking bay will be by permit only which has to be paid for in advance, but will not guarantee you a space! These bays will be shared between residents and businesses.
(b) The location of some Loading/Unloading bays are being decided – so if you feel this is important to your business, you must speak now!
(c) Many extra spaces have been found for parking bays, but they will all be either ‘permit only’ parking or ‘pay and display’. (We are trying to negotiate to leave some 2 hour bays within the Golden Triangle).

In some ways we are back where we began some 20 years ago when we had to fight hard to get the Quarter recognised as ‘an area with special parking needs’ but it is important that it is SEEN that we have your full support. Once these parking changes have been agreed on (end March) the work will proceed and it will be TOO LATE to stop it happening and it could be 20 years before another survey is carried out! You have two chances:
1. There will be a presentation at the Big Peg – date to be announced – when you can look at the proposed changes on a map and talk with Atkins (the parking consultant), and/or
2. Visit the JQRP offices on 7th March. (There will be a special announcement about this in the February Flyer).
Please help the JQA and JQRP to support you – if we don’t know what you want, we can’t fight for you!
