Sutton Tools – Cycling for Soweto

As soon as the dust has settled on the Olympic Games, Maggie and Geoff from Sutton Tools are cycling 300 miles from London to Paris to raise money for the Cornerstone Project.

In 2009 Suttons gave a set of tools to Nqobile Nkosi, a young jeweller in Soweto.

With UK goldsmith Paul Spurgeon as his mentor, plus a two week internship at Weston Beamor, Nqobile now provides work and training for four people and has opened the first ever jewellery shop in Soweto, soon to be followed by the establishment of a small jewellery school to help Sowetan youngsters out of poverty. “A hand up not a hand out” is Cornerstone’s motto.

During the Olympic fortnight, Maggie plans to give 2% of Sutton’s turnover to Cornerstone and we want our customers and friends to support us by sponsoring our ride. We have only recently taken up cycling and need all the encouragement we can muster!

You can donate directly to Cornerstone, A/C No 00735117, Sort Code 309399, Lloyds TSB, but please call Maggie or Geoff on 0121 236 7139 or e-mail to let us know you have donated.”

The Hockley Flyer magazine if entirely funded by the advertising, but we could always do with a little bit more funding. The advertising not only pays for the design/printing, but also postage, delivery, all the associated paperwork/accounts, and research for the Heritage section. Our subscribers pay only a bit more then the postage/mailing costs, and the magazines are free - no cover price.
