Editorial February 2026

A recent email started me thinking, how many jewellers’ workbenches are there available to rent in the jewellery quarter for small or new jewellers? Sadly, I don’t know of any. At our suggestion many years ago, the landlord of the Big Peg (now JQ Modern) was unsure of what to do with his top floor – there was even a suggestion of a huge restaurant, but we suggested starter units for jewellers with individual workbenches in small units, but access to larger equipment not used quite so often in a shared community part of the floor.

That did quite well and remember talking to jewellers years later that started in those units and moved ono bigger and better things in the industry. But where do budding jewellers go now?

With the trend of many established jewellers downsizing their premises but not necessarily their workforce, maybe they could find a secure place for such startups.

There are plenty of places to find office desktop space from just one desk upwards.

Speaking of property many of my friends really think I should move into the jewellery quarter with premises with a view to working from my new JQ ‘home’. What they do not realise is that when the magazines are delivered from the printers, I really need my own entrance as it is quite a few large heavy boxes. Has anyone got suitable premises? I have found very few, and they are over £450,000!
