Editorial November 2020

Just into the second National Lockdown at the time of writing for COVID-19 and although the streets are quiet in the JQ, reports from the trade manufacturers are very encouraging. Sad about the restaurants/pubs etc though who have done so much work to comply with Regulations, and some may not survive.

FA Cup
Our feature last month about the FA cup has caused quite a sensation but it does not finish there – Tom Fattorini has added quite a lot more information which we are thrilled to publish.

The Chamberlain Clock – Joseph Chamberlain
Also, we have had very appreciative comments about the Chamberlain Clock feature and the main reason for its erection in 1903, when it was paid for by the Jewellery & Silverware trades, in appreciation of his services to the Jewellery Quarter.

Important: Pop up Cycle Lanes & Blocked off Streets
The BCC arranged all this without consultation and are NOW asking for comments if you find it is affecting your business. Visit the website now – it is most important to stress that the Jewellery Quarter is a ‘destination’ not a quick cycle route through from other areas via the JQ to the QE Hospital and beyond, which is what is being publicised.

A large number of people have already changed their cars and vans to comply with the Clean Air Zone which comes into effect next year, but these cycle lanes are making it difficult for companies and residents to access their own premises. It is reported that vans are now having to drive round and round the JQ trying to make deliveries, causing extra pollution. Without your comments the cycle lanes etc could be made permanent.

Police & Security
It is easy to notice at least three traffic wardens operating in the JQ simultaneously but at the same time absolutely no sign anywhere of police or security guards in any shape or form, yet on twitter we see six/eight such persons patrolling Colmore Row BIDS area. Why is this? Are we absolutely crime-free here?

There was a sudden rush of police presence when someone was stabbed a few weeks ago, but might it have been prevented if we had a higher security profile here? I know the police hold ‘surgeries’ and give advice from time to time, but they are the usual items like ‘lock up your car’ and more recently ‘lock up your bike’.

Above all, persevere and maintain your sense of humour – the JQ community has built up a wonderful reputation over the past 300 years for survival under nearly impossible circumstances – good luck in all your endeavours. The true ‘gold’ in our community is in the ‘golden’ hearts of its community.
