Euro-MP visits Jewellery Quarter

West Midlands MEP Liz Lynn visited the Jewellery Quarter a couple of weeks ago to meet with local business people.

Her visit started with a visit to the Museum of Jewellery and she showed great concern at the proposals to restrict opening hours of the Museum. Liz then visited George McKenzie in Vyse Street and was intrigued by his workshop, etc.

Liz’s press agent had asked Marie Haddleton to invite a small group of business representatives to join her over lunch at the Li Ho Chinese Restaurant in Augusta Street.

This was not easy to arrange as most people were at the Spring Fair but after some persistence she managed to get Michael Allchin (The Assay Master), Geoff Field (BJA) and Prof. Norman Cherry (School of Jewellery) along.

There followed a very interesting talk about red tape affecting small businesses and the jewellery industry in particular. Liz went away with a great deal of information and expressed a desire to re-visit the Quarter at a later date.

The Hockley Flyer magazine is entirely funded by the advertising, but could do with a little bit more funding. The advertising not only pays for the design/printing, but also postage, delivery, all the associated paperwork/accounts, and research for the Heritage section. Subscribers pay only a bit more than the postage/mailing costs, and the magazines are free - no cover price.
