Goldsmith’s Company Awards

The Goldsmith’s Company will, for the first time, have a physical and inter-active presence at the annual New Designers’ Exhibition at the Business Design Centre, Islington from July 3-6 2003. In addition to sponsoring the zone dedicated to jewellery, silversmithing and metalwork, this year the Company will also be taking a stand in the centre of the zone.

This new development is part of the long-term strategy of the Goldsmiths’ Company’s Department of Technology and Training, headed by its Director, Peter Taylor, to increase awareness of the key role the Company plays in the support for the craft and the industry and to highlight the Company’s approachability.

Peter Taylor said: “The New Designers Exhibition offers a unique opportunity for us to support and showcase recent graduates from across the UK’s jewellery and silversmithing courses. The Goldsmiths’ Company is committed to encouraging these individuals to take an active future role in the development of our industry and this event plays an important part in this process.”

The Goldsmiths’ Company stand will be manned by members of the Department of Technology and Training who will be able to talk to visitors and exhibitors about the Company’s developing role as a technical and training resource for the industry in the UK.

Within this role the Department regularly arranges masterclasses and symposia on subjects pertinent to developments in the trade, as well as the annual five-day course ‘Getting Started’, which offers recent jewellery and silver graduates an introduction to business. Other activities include the highly important practice of binding apprentices in the age-old form thereby offering the traditional form of training to maintain pre-eminence of British craftsmanship, as well as sponsoring apprentices in international trade competitions. Bursaries and competitions are another means by which the Company encourages and supports young talent within the jewellery and silversmithing trades.

With a display area for brochures and literature relating to the Company’s numerous activities listed above, the stand will also offer the facility of interactive access to the Company’s recently launched online directory initiative ‘Who’s Who in Gold and Silver’, which gives direct internet accessibility to the UK’s leading lights in silverware, jewellery and art medals.

The Goldsmiths’ Company sponsorship of the New Designers Exhibition will also include two awards, each worth £1,500, an increase of £500 on previous years, these additional funds will provide a precious metal bursary for each recipient. The competition criteria will emphasise design excellence and commerciality and the judging panel will comprise two industry experts assisted by Peter Taylor, Director Technology and Training for the Goldsmiths’ Company. The award winners will also be offered automatic places on the Company’s highly sought after annual ‘Getting Started’ course. An award will only be made if there is a worthy recipient.

The New Designers’ Exhibition is the annual showcase of work from Britain’s leading graduate designers representing the best in contemporary design. It aims to launch the fiber-talent of exemplary design into the contemporary market place and to increase awareness for both the graduate designers and their work. As an event it attracts industry professionals, the consumer public and the media and attendance is expected to exceed 25,000 visitors. Organised in two parts The Goldsmiths’ Company’s Jewellery, Silversmithing and Metalwork Zone will be in the first part of the exhibition opening on Thursday July 3 through to Sunday, July 6.
