Made for Newhall Square

RO St Bernards (ROSB) has let the first floor of 6-7 Newhall Square, Birmingham, to Midlands Architecture and the Designed Environment (MADE). MADE is the architecture centre for the West Midlands and was established to raise the standards of architecture, landscape and urban design across Birmingham and the region.

It provides design advice to public, private and voluntary organisations and communities.

Funded by Advantage West Midlands, the Arts Council and CABE (the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment), MADE runs training courses, exhibitions and networking events for those working in the built environment.

MADE has taken a six-year lease on 1,970 sq ft/183 sq m at 6-7 Newhall Square. The organisation moves from Fazeley Street, in Digbeth, having outgrown its premises.

The organisation employs eight full- and part-time staff and has an expert panel of 40 built environment specialists including architects, artists, engineers, designers and urban designers.

David Tittle, chief executive of MADE, said: “Given that our mission is to raise architectural standards, it is important that we practice what we preach.

6-7 Newhall Square was specifically designed as a low carbon building, without the need for air conditioning. The façade, glazing, wall insulation, solar control blinds and natural ventilation make it one of the most energy efficient buildings in Birmingham.

On a practical level, as well as housing our team, we now have additional exhibition and function space, and access to a lecture theatre for our training courses.”

The Hockley Flyer magazine if entirely funded by the advertising, but we could always do with a little bit more funding. The advertising not only pays for the design/printing, but also postage, delivery, all the associated paperwork/accounts, and research for the Heritage section. Our subscribers pay only a bit more then the postage/mailing costs, and the magazines are free - no cover price.
