Major (Thomas) Harry Gem (1819-1881)

The ‘Harry Gem Project’ was brought to a successful conclusion in late June when the grave of this important person was restored in Key Hill Cemetery, where the grave had laid unmarked and neglected for many years.

Harry Gem, the originator, and his friend JBA Perera, created the first Lawn Tennis Club in the world and developed lawn tennis here in Birmingham at The Archery & Lawn Tennis Society in Edgbaston.

Bob Holland organised the restoration and raised the necessary funds

The Hockley Flyer magazine is entirely funded by the advertising, but could do with a little bit more funding. The advertising not only pays for the design/printing, but also postage, delivery, all the associated paperwork/accounts, and research for the Heritage section. Subscribers pay only a bit more than the postage/mailing costs, and the magazines are free - no cover price.
