Pen Talk – News from the Pen Museum

The Pen Museum urgently need Volunteers to help man the Pen Room in the Argent Centre – hours 11am -4pm daily and 1pm-4pm on Sundays (cups of tea or coffee are provided free!) If you are interested and have a little spare time.

If you want to study calligraphy, classes are held on Saturdays at 10am until 11.30am.

A bid has been put in to the Lottery Heritage Fund to help The Pen Museum obtain the Charles Thomas Collection, which used to be at the Science Museum and at the moment is not on show anywhere.

The Library is building up a library of books relating to writing implements. If anyone can offer such books they will be gratefully received.

The Pen Room also report that with The Jewellery Quarter being developed not solely as a residential area is having a knock-on effect on the Pen Room as interest in the area is growing. Tourism statistics are very positive and encouraging, showing the Pen Room catering for a great diversity of ages, nationalities and cultures.

Having gained Museum status, the Pen Room has seen an increase in visitor numbers and membership has increased.

The Hockley Flyer magazine if entirely funded by the advertising, but we could always do with a little bit more funding. The advertising not only pays for the design/printing, but also postage, delivery, all the associated paperwork/accounts, and research for the Heritage section. Our subscribers pay only a bit more then the postage/mailing costs, and the magazines are free - no cover price.
