Since their very first PUK welder in 2002, Lampert’s technical department has worked with welding engineers at the University of Applied Sciences in Wurzburg to bring this technology to jewellery making.
The new PUK 3s, launched in the UK at the Jewellery Show at Spring Fair, now has an improved impulse modelling feature producing even better welding precision.
The introduction of high frequency pulse welding enables the user to overlay the weld with pulses to change the characteristics of the welding arc, allowing the PUK 3s to cater not only for materials which are normally considered difficult to weld but also for metals and alloys with very high heat conductivity or low melting points.
In the PUK 3s this is represented by the new mode ‘HF Pulse’, which is designed to cater for welding with silver alloys and also for avoiding hot cracks. When used with longer welding times, which it tends to favour, it can prevent weld cracks which can occur with certain welding geometries.
The ‘Gap’ welding mode also makes use of high frequency pulse welding by reducing the diameter of the welding arc but greatly increasing the arc force. Even when faced with tight angles or recesses, welds can be much more reliable.
In the PUK 3s, the normal standard welding mode and the micro mode display softer and gentler welding performance with smoother and more even welds and longer life electrodes.
The programmable memory has also been improved in the PUK 3s with the provision of up to five memory slots for factory presets to assist working with silver, adding metal with welding wires and smoothing of surfaces. In addition there are five other memory slots which the operator can use to save specific settings which can be named and modified at will.
The foot switch, an optional extra for the PUK 3s, opens new possibilities for those tackling very specific and difficult welds, allowing the user to trigger the welds with the foot, a technique which will be familiar for those who have experience of laser welders.
The PUK 3s is rounded off with an improved welding microscope which forms an integral part of the PUK welding system and which now comes with a powerful LED lamp for more effective illumination of the working area.
