PC Michele Birch from The Crime Fighting Team at Vyse Street Police Station, in conjunction with the Retail Crime Organisation (Birmingham), have recently held two meetings regarding the implementation of a Retail Radio Scheme for the Jewellery Quarter.
The meetings were well attended and the response from the retailers and others was very positive.
The aim of the scheme is that each premise has a radio, the police patrolling the area have a radio and eventually the camera operator will have a radio. Everyone can then talk to each other to pass information about suspicious characters or activity in the area, share information about stolen goods and local criminals and for us all to simply keep an eye out for each other.
Another advantage of joining the scheme is that for the duration of your membership the RCO will publish photographs of people convicted of crime in the area. This is only possible because members of the RCO will automatically be signed up to Data Protection. We are now in the exciting position whereby we have enough people already committed to the scheme for it to be set up and are aiming to ‘Go-Live’ on Monday 9th December 2002, just in time for the Christmas Rush!
We have now been granted a licence for the frequency and the issue and training of the radios will be done on Thursday 5th December.
