Celebrating 250 years of the Birmingham Assay Office

Birmingham City University students were invited to design a commemorative logo mark to be used from 3rd April 2023 until the end of the year to celebrate the 250th birthday of the Birmingham Assay Office.

Around eighty Graphic Design students at the university were given the brief to work on. Due to the size requirements of a logo mark, the guidelines for the brief were strict. A logo mark can often be applied at a size of less than a millimetre, therefore the design must be kept simple enough to still be visible. However, the design should also illustrate the history behind the Birmingham Assay Office.

The Birmingham Assay Office has been protecting the consumer and servicing the trade with independence and integrity since 1773 and has been a centre of expert opinion and independent assessment of jewellery and precious metals for 250 years.

The chosen logo mark will sit alongside the compulsory hallmark. Throughout 2023, customers at the Birmingham Assay Office can chose to pay £1 to have the logo added to their work. All money raised through the application of the commemorative logo mark will go towards two chosen charities: Midlands Air Ambulance and The Benevolent Society.
Following a strong response to the brief, it was third year Graphic Design student, Caitlin Beale, whose logo mark was chosen as the winning design.

Caitlin’s design celebrates the well-known story of how Birmingham came to have the anchor as its town mark whilst recognising the strong historical connection between the Birmingham Assay Office and the Sheffield Assay Office, whose original town mark was a crown, also founded in 1773.

The mark will be applied by laser and can be added to all precious metal items including Gold, Silver, Platinum, and Palladium.

There will be several public events and fundraising activities held throughout the year including opportunities to attend Discovery Days; exclusive tours of the Birmingham Assay Office to celebrate this momentous milestone.
