Cemeteries Restoration Work Update

By Josie Wall

The second phase of the restoration work currently being undertaken by HFN has experienced a number of delays due to the pandemic, but the vast majority of the work is now completed.

There are some finishing touches to be made in both cemeteries, including a final sweep of the loose gravel from the tar, ‘spray and chip’ paths at the entrances and on steep slopes. Some additional railings will also be installed in Key Hill cemetery, extending the new railings down the slope to protect the bluebell patch adjacent to the path.

The chapel footprint garden in Warstone Lane Cemetery is almost completed and will now pause while we await the delivery of the memorial stone.

This gives Midland Conservation a chance to come back on to site and complete a small section of the catacomb masonry. This additional work was not originally seen as essential but has been made possible by project contingency funding.

The Hockley Flyer magazine is entirely funded by the advertising, but could do with a little bit more funding. The advertising not only pays for the design/printing, but also postage, delivery, all the associated paperwork/accounts, and research for the Heritage section. Subscribers pay only a bit more than the postage/mailing costs, and the magazines are free - no cover price.
