Winner Announced for the Birmingham Assay Office ‘Hope’ Competition

As restrictions lift across the UK today and to signify ‘Freedom Day’ with a mark of ‘hope’, the Birmingham Assay Office has announced its winner for their ‘Hope’ competition that launched on 23rd March 2020.

Children aged between 7 and 16 across West Midlands were invited to design a unique logo to signify ‘hope’ for the future. Like the Rainbow logo launched by the Birmingham Assay Office last year, the ‘hope’ logo would then be applied as an optional mark on jewellery alongside a statutory hallmark.

The winning design was submitted by 8-year-old Livi Mitchell. Livi was welcomed to the Birmingham Assay Office to meet Technical Laser Specialist, Suki Singh, who explained to her how he adapted her design in readiness for laser marking.

Suki said: “We received some fantastic designs for the competition, but Livi’s design stood out. Her design featured a heart encompassing a dove. The heart represents love and support for the NHS, whilst the dove is a symbol of hope and freedom for the future.”

Livi said: “I was excited to be able to push the button on the laser machine as the first ‘Hope’ symbol was lasered on to my bookmark. I can’t stop smiling.”

Livi was awarded with a silver bookmark lasered with her logo design, a book about Matthew Boulton and a ‘behind the scenes’ visit to The Assay Office with lunch in the Silver Room.

The winning design will be available from 19th July until 31st December 2021 to hobbyists, jewellery manufacturers, jewellery retailers and members of the public. It can be lasered on gold, silver, platinum or palladium jewellery as well as a standalone logo on non-precious metal articles. Like the Rainbow logo, the proceeds raised will be donated to our NHS heroes.
