Ugliest to Prettiest Building

The Hockley Flyer featured the renovation of the old Bracelon building at 36 Hylton St referring to it as “Quite possibly the ugliest building in the JQ” which Neil Smith of the former R J Smith ltd believes was a very fair comment.

Neil reiterates: “As a result of selling my jewellery business in 2017 we renovated the old Bracelon building at 36 Hylton St.

The front aspect of the building was covered in 1970’s cladding with awful metal and plastic windows and doors.

When we renovated the building, we were keen to retain as many of the original characteristics as we could whilst accommodating the contemporary requirements of today’s small businesses.

Earlier this year, with the help of Birmingham University under Project Chrysalis by Phylis Nicklin, we also managed to reproduce some large images of Hylton St dating from 1967 and have displayed them in the entrance hall to highlight the history of the JQ.

I am pleased to say that the six self contained offices are fully let and you could arrange for some copies of The Hockley Flyer to be delivered to the offices for the tenants to read and thus be kept up to date with the history and the changes that are happening in the area they now work in.

The Hockley Flyer magazine if entirely funded by the advertising, but we could always do with a little bit more funding. The advertising not only pays for the design/printing, but also postage, delivery, all the associated paperwork/accounts, and research for the Heritage section. Our subscribers pay only a bit more then the postage/mailing costs, and the magazines are free - no cover price.
